It’s Finally Here

I guess you could say that I’ve done a little traveling since my last post.  I got assigned to AA Montgomery at the end of Spring Training, so after our last day in Florida we headed for Alabama.  We had a nice caravan going for the nine hour trip besides a few miscues by our “leaders”, Cody Cipriano and Nevin Ashley.  They took it upon themselves to find us somewhere to eat on the way up, so two wrong exits and a 30 minute detour later we were back on track.  The wing joint they did find was pretty good, so I didn’t complain too much.

We  had a few days of practices, media stuff, meet the team, etc. when we got to Montgomery, then we finally started the season on April 7th.  After our first five games at home, we hit the road to Tennessee to play five against the Smokies.  So now we are back in “The Gump” ready for another five game home-stand before we hit the road again this weekend.  We did have an off day last week, but other than going to Bible Study and crushing some Japanese Hibachi my day was pretty boring.  As a team, we’ve had our ups and downs so far this year.  Our record is only 3-7, but yesterday we played by far our best game of the season so I think we are about to turn things around.  This is by far the most talented team I’ve ever been on, so I’m just waiting on us to turn the corner.

Coming back from Tennessee was bittersweet.  As a team, we were ready to get out of there.  They won four out of five from us, it was cold, the hotel sucked(which I’ll get into later), and it seemed like we were there forever.  For me personally, it wasn’t so bad of a trip.  My wife came down to visit me, I got to see my parents and my grandfather, and I pitched pretty good, so it’s hard to complain.  I also got to see my dog, so that’s always a good time!  Speaking of my wife, Aubree, she went to the doctor today for a checkup and the baby is doing great.  We find out the sex on May 16th, so we are pretty pumped about that.

So far I’ve had three appearances on the mound, and they have all gone pretty good.  I’m still trying to get used to the whole bullpen thing, but so far I am loving it.  It’s easy to explain the physical differences between starting and relieving, but it’s not so easy to explain the mental differences.  Physically, you have to get ready quicker.  That’s it.  You have to be ready when you’re called on.  I thought that was going to be extremely tough for me, but it turns out it’s not that bad.  You sit down there in the ‘pen, do the occasional stretching, and wait.  The mental difference is almost a little intriguing to me so far.  You go to the field everyday with no idea if, when, or how much you will pitch. Will the score be 0-0 in the 9th? Will it be 15-0 in the 5th?  What batters will I face?  Will I sit there all night and do nothing?  It’s a big difference from starting when you are on a set rotation and you know exactly what your day will consist of.  You know the lineup, you know the score is going to be 0-0, and you have a set routine that you go by before every start.  For me, it’s a huge adrenaline rush coming out of the bullpen(except for blowouts, I’m assuming that can’t be exciting).  You don’t really know how long you’re going to be on the mound, so it’s full speed ahead when you get out there.  No holding back.  As a starter, you know you’re out there for a while so it’s always in the back of your head not to go all out in the first few innings.  I’m looking forward to my new role in the bullpen, so we will see how it goes!

Now, back to the hotel thing.  Don’t get me wrong, the hotel we stayed at in Tennessee(I’ll refrain from name dropping) wasn’t terrible, but it’s just not a good setup.  Minor League Baseball hotel criteria probably differ a little from the average person’s.  Think about it.  A group of 25 guys show up at a hotel, stay for at least four or five nights, and have no cars.  That’s our life on the road.  Needless to say, there are a few main things every team in Minor League Baseball should consider with their team hotels…

1) Close to Restaurants.  There is NOTHING worse than this.  We don’t want to get pizza or chinese delivered every freakin’ day.  We don’t want to walk two miles just to eat Wendy’s.  Just pick a hotel with three or four choices within walking distance.  And not all fast food places either!

2)Close to Gas Stations.  Again, we don’t want to walk two miles to get a snack, gatorade, and we definitely don’t want to walk that far for beer.  There are gas stations everywhere, right?  Wrong.  Just one, that’s all we need.

3)Close to Activities.  Something to do nearby would be nice.  We aren’t picky so we really don’t care what it is.  We have a lot of down time in the mornings, and even more if it rains.  We usually don’t want to lay in bed all day.

4)Semi-nice Hotel.  We are in the minor leagues.  We aren’t spoiled with the places we stay, but at least have a clean hotel that doesn’t smell like smoke and has a television that works.

That’s not too much to ask, is it? Most teams actually do a pretty good job at this stuff, but there are a few that leave us thinking, “How did they pick this place?”  Gotta love Minor League Baseball.

Okay, I’m going to grab some lunch and head to the field.  Hope everyone has a great week!

The end is near

Well, the end of Spring Training is near.  Only four more days until camp breaks.  The last week of Spring Training always has its ups and downs as everyone is looking forward to the season and some are just hoping they actually make a team.  The last week is always the most stressful for players that are “on the fence” of making a team or being cut.  The truth is, not many players are 100% certain of their status.  Any drive to the park could be the last, or there could be thousands of drives to the park left.  We have only had one “release day” so far this Spring Training, and there will be at least one more in the next few days.

Release days are by far the worst days in Spring Training for a lot of guys.  I’ve heard that many organizations cut players in a variety of ways, none of which are enjoyable.  Our organization does it first thing in the morning when you arrive at the park.  On arrival to the park, our clubhouse guys are waiting outside the locker room on golf carts…that’s when you know it’s release day.  If you’re one of the unlucky ones, they take you up to the offices to talk with management and with the blink of an eye your career with that organization is over. It sounds crazy, but it really is as simple as that.  Over the years, I’ve had many good friends go through this, and it gets harder every year to see guys leave.  It’s always nerve-racking to walk by the clubhouse guys, just holding your breath and hoping they don’t talk to you.  So with the excitement of a new season on the horizon, this is always in the back of everyone’s mind almost every single day in Spring Training.

As for me, I’ve had a pretty good Spring Training I think.  I’ve had mostly good outings, with the exception of one outing in which I got hit around a little. It happens.  With four days left, I’m still unsure of where I’ll be this summer.  I’ve been in the AAA work group all spring and hopefully I’ll break camp with them and be in Durham, but I wouldn’t be shocked if I was back in AA in Montgomery.  Either way, as long as I still have a job, I’m okay with it.

One thing I know is that I’m ready to get out of here and start the season.  The days in Spring Training get really monotonous.  Wake up early, go to the field, eat, run, throw, drills, batting practice, more drills, eat, play, go home. Repeat.  On the average day, we are usually at the park from about 7 until around 3 or 4 , depending on if we are playing home or away.  It gets a little boring, but it’s important to get prepared the best we can for the season.

Enough of Spring Training, how about March Madness? What is going on? VCU…are you serious? I’m all for the cinderella story, but the winner of the Butler/VCU game does not interest me whatsoever to watch in the title game.  I guess that’s the beauty of the tournament.  I’m just glad after all the smack talk from the UNC fans, they got put out right after my Dukies did.  Well deserved!  I’m not a huge UT basketball fan, but I do follow them and cheer for them when they play anyone not named Duke or ETSU.  I’m sure everyone has opinions of Bruce Pearl getting fired, so here is mine…what a terrible decision!!!  So what the guy cheated or lied or whatever he did? He took a crappy UT program from the ashes and rebuilt it.  Just look at his record at UT and tell me that you agree with that decision.  As the saying goes, “If you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin!”

I’ll leave this post with a plug for my buddy Emeel.  We had the annual “Rays Talent Show” a couple of weeks ago, and Emeel won with his medley of songs.  He has already got plugs on twitter from David Price and Reid Brignac, so I’m sure the ten people who read this won’t make much of a difference, but here is the link anyways…

Sorry for the delay

Well, it’s been a while since my last post and I apologize to all of my faithful readers.  I know there are a lot of you(that was a joke).  It’s been a crazy last few weeks with so much going on.  I don’t even know where to begin with everything that has happened, but the biggest thing is that we found out a few weeks ago that my wife Aubree is pregnant and we are expecting our first child in October!  We are very excited and looking forward to being parents.  The first thing everyone asks me is, “What do you want? Boy or girl?”  The truth is, I really don’t care.  Everyone expects me to want a boy, but it honestly doesn’t matter to me at all.  We have already had numerous discussions on baby names, and we have a couple in mind but we still have a while for that.  On our visit to the doctor Aubree got an ultrasound and we got to see the baby and hear the heartbeat.  I’ve never had a feeling like that in my life, it was crazy to hear that for the first time. I almost cried, is that weird?  I don’t think so.   Hopefully things will go smoothly through her pregnancy and we will have a healthy baby in the fall.

I have been in Florida a little over a week for Spring Training.  This is my 5th Spring Training with the Rays, and it amazes me how much it changes every year.  My first couple of years I was the new guy that barely knew anyone except the guys on my team the previous year.  Then the last couple of years, I pretty much knew everyone whether it be from past teams or past Spring Trainings.  This year is completely different!  When pitchers and catchers reported last week, I literally knew about 10 guys.  Then the position players showed up and that made for about 10 more guys I know.  Through the years, guys have either gotten released, traded, retired, or anything else you can think of.  It’s a good thing that I’m still around, but it makes you feel old hanging around a bunch of 18 year olds that were in high school a year ago!

I threw to hitters for the first time today, which was my final tune up before Spring Training games start in a few days.  So far, no complaints.  My arm feels good, and I made it through our conditioning tests which I wasn’t looking forward to.  I stopped by to see my parents on the 20 hour drive from PA, and it was good to relax and see them on my way down.  I went over to my old stomping ground at ETSU to throw a bullpen, and got to catch up with my old coaches for a little.  It was good to see those guys, and it made me think of all the good (and a few bad) times I had!

When I got to Florida and started talking with some of my teammates, they all had comments about my blog.  Most of them said it was gay or they were expecting it to be funnier.  I guess they want me to make fun of people more or tell stories that don’t need to be told for the whole world to see.  Or maybe they’re just jealous they don’t know how to construct a sentence.  Regardless, they’ll read this and I’ll get crap for it tomorrow at the field.  Oh well.  The culture in a baseball locker room is definitely like no other I’ve ever been in.  It’s all making fun of each other, calling each other out on everything, and a bunch of other things that wouldn’t be very kosher in any other setting.  But nobody would have it any other way.  The guys that get their feelings hurt the easiest or are sensitive to joking around are usually the guys that get the most crap.  I sometimes carry over my baseball etiquette into daily conversations with my wife, and that usually doesn’t turn out well for me.  I guess I need to realize I can’t constantly pick on my own wife!  One of her favorite lines is, “I can tell you’ve been hanging around your baseball friends.”

I’ll try to get another blog up in a week or 2,  but I lost the charger to my computer so who knows when I’ll have that back.  I’ll try to think of something creative for my next post.  I’m going to be pretty busy with Spring Training, golf, and of course March Madness.  I’m hoping the Dukies can repeat, but I don’t really think they will.  I guess we will see soon enough…

Busy, busy, busy…not really.

It’s been a while since I blogged it up, so I thought I would get one done while I have time.  I’ve been pretty busy over the last week or so.  Between work, Facebook, working out, throwing, twitter, a road trip, and house hunting, there hasn’t been much down time.

My wife and I have started looking for a house recently.  We aren’t necessarily in a rush to buy anything, but we are just starting the process so we know what we like and what we don’t like.  It’s actually fun to go around looking at houses and see how people live.  Being married to a realtor, she looks at houses in a different perspective than me and she notices things that I’m oblivious to.  Obviously, Aubree and I have completely different opinions on certain things.  We looked at a few houses last week and she hated my favorite house.  This is going to be a fun experience!

My highlight of the week, and probably of the whole offseason, was going to Gatlinburg, TN to meet up with my college buddies.  We rented a chalet last weekend for a couple of nights with my 2 best friends from college and their wife/fiance.  It’s not very often that we have the chance to all get together like the good ol’ days at ETSU.  With everyone living in different parts of the country and working different jobs, it’s hard to see everyone as much as we would like to.  To no surprise, we had a great time.  I did learn a couple of things about myself over the weekend…

1) I absolutely suck at ice skating.  I’m not talking about the occasional fall.  I’m talking about barely even being able to stand up on the ice.  My buddies got a good laugh out of it at least.

2)I still dominate at mini-golf.  Always have.  Always will.

3)I have this weird obsession with knives.  These stores in Gatlinburg have the coolest knives I’ve ever seen for like 20 bucks.  I used to have a couple when I was younger.  I tried to buy one but Aubree said no.  She won.  No knife.

It was nice to get away from the daily workout/throw/work routine that always comes in Jan/Feb before Spring Training.  It’s less than 3 weeks before I head down to Florida, so reality is setting in that it’s about that time.  I always get anxious around this time of year, but I’m definitely not looking forward to the 18 hour drive that lies ahead.

How about that Super Bowl?  If you reference back to my first blog, I believe you’ll find a prediction that was correct.  I enjoyed watching the game, but with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter my 11 year old sister-in-law kept asking me when Glee was coming on.  The post-game Glee episode was pretty legit though.

Speaking of sports, how about those Dukies?  I’ve been a Duke fan since I was a kid, and the Duke/UNC rivalry is unlike any other in sports.  How many other rivals are perennial top 10 teams and are 15 minutes from each other? Zero.

I still remember going to watch Duke as a kid when they had Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, etc. at Cameron Indoor(coolest gym I’ve ever seen).  I got a lot of autographs on my hat, but Chris Collins(now an Asst. Coach at Duke) told me my pen didn’t work.  I cried.  I hated Chris Collins for like 15 years, but I’ve finally forgiven him.

Okay, I’m done rambling now.  Once again, thanks for wasting your time reading this.  It’s been a pleasure.

Snowday!

It has been a fun week for me so far.  I just got back in from playing in the snow for the 2nd day in a row.  While the snow seems to make everyone else mad and irritable, I have no problem with it.  I guess it gives me an excuse to act like a kid again, which I do on a daily basis anyways.  My wife has 2 sisters that are 14 and 11, so I’m always rooting for them to get out of school so I can go out and play.

Since moving to the north, I have noticed just how different things are when it snows.  It just dumped almost a foot of snow up here in one day, and schools will be back in session tomorrow.  That sort of snow would paralyze Johnson City, TN for at least a week!  It snows up here and everyone just goes about their business like nothing happened.  Nothing closes, no cars in ditches, no missing school for 1/2 inch of snow(mom!)…you get the point.

I finally got my Spring Training packet yesterday, and I’m reporting on March 4th.  My throwing program and workouts have been going great.  My arm feels better now than any other offseason(knock on wood).  Maybe I’ll break 80 mph in Spring Training this year!  It’s always around this time of year that the itch comes back to get on the field.  I think I finally locked down a place to live in Port Charlotte, so that huge nuisance is gone.

It didn’t take me long to come up with my next list.  I will start off by warning you that some people might get offended by this.  You may find yourself wondering if you are one of these people, and if you are..well..I don’t know what to tell you.  We all love Facebook.  It’s addicting, we are nosey, and we have nothing better to do with our time.  I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to spending too much time on Facebook.  What I’m not guilty of, however, are abusing the 5 cardinal sins of Facebook…

1)Changing your status 5 times a day- do you really think anyone cares what you’re doing every 2 hours? If you do this, get Twitter.

2)’Liking’ your own status- Of course you like it, you wrote it. I can’t believe people actually do this.

3)Taking close up pictures of yourself at different angles, begging for a compliment- We all know what you look like, stop posting a million pics of yourself so people will lie and tell you how pretty you are.

4)’Poking’- What does it even mean?  I recently got ‘poked’ by a guy I don’t even know.  I assume ‘poking’ was created as a flirtation device? Or just to say hey? I don’t get it.

5)Posting sad and/or pathetic quotes- Your boyfriend broke up with you or cheated on you.  We get it.  Stop looking for sympathy from people on the internet.  Does it really make you feel better when 10 people ‘Like’ your crappy love quote? I doubt it.

If you do some of these things, good for you.  I’m not here to judge anyone at all.  Maybe you think something I do is stupid, I don’t care.  I do a lot of stupid things.  If I have offended you, get a sense of humor.  If anyone has anything to add to the list, please feel free to do so because I’m always up for a good laugh.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, and be safe in the snow! On that note, back outside to work on my snowman.

I don’t know…literally

Since my last post, I was hoping to have a lot figured out about the upcoming months.  Instead, I know nothing.  I should get my Spring Training packet in the mail any day now letting me know when to report, etc.  I know I report the first week of March, just not exactly sure what day.  I have also been working hard the past week to line up somewhere to live during Spring Training.  And again, nothing so far.  Before I got married,  I had to live in the team hotel every Spring Training.  Now I find my own place to live and make some extra money, which is always a good thing.

In my opinion, finding a place to live every six months is one of the most annoying things there is about minor league baseball.  I’m talking to real estate agents, rental agencies, and anyone else that might help for a 1 month rental.  Then, at the end of Spring Training, I’ll do it all over again to find somewhere to live throughout the season. You would think it would get easier finding a place to live year after year…it doesn’t.

One thing I did figure out this week was that my wife and I are meeting up with some of our old friends over Super Bowl weekend.  We rented a chalet down in Gatlinburg, TN with a few of our college friends, so that will definitely be a good time (see mom, I spelled ‘definitely’ right for you!).  It’s always a good time when we get to meet up and talk about the good ol’ days!  We might not get as rowdy as we once did, but I guarantee you we will try!  It seems like the only time I get to see my old friends are at weddings, which is happening a lot these days.

I’m in my second week of throwing right now and so far I feel great.  I don’t get back on the mound until February, but I’m already itching to get back on it.  With working at a baseball facility, it’s a lot easier to get my throwing done than in the past winters.  Last year, I threw a few times a week in an old, beat down middle school gym.  Two years ago, I actually threw outside until I had to get on the mound.  I made Aubree stand in front of a fence and attempt to catch the ball…and she was actually pretty good!  I guess that’s what happens when you move to the north!

Speaking of Aubree, she has her first settlement this week and I’m very proud of her!  She is a realtor with RE/MAX if you didn’t already know.  She has been working hard to get her career started, and I’m probably more excited for her than she is for herself.

Well, I guess that’s about it.  Since I had some positive feedback on my list about people at the gym, I’ll come up with another sarcastic(and very true) list for my next blog.  Any ideas?  Let me know…

Random Thoughts

I can promise that this post isn’t really about anything of importance.  However, you may learn something.  I have been sitting around this morning just thinking about a few things, then I actually started laughing out loud to myself over a couple of them.  Then I decided to share…

I’ve been hitting the gym pretty hard since Christmas.  I know it may be hard for some of you to believe, but it’s true!  I go to LA Fitness for my workouts, then I get my baseball training done at Holman Baseball Academy here in Reading.  Going to the gym everyday is actually beginning to be something I look forward to.  Not only for the workouts, but mainly because the people at the gym entertain me every single day.  I’ll break the gym crowd down for you a little bit…

1) Meatheads – typical gym rats, usually wearing no sleeves, grunting loud,   always working on their upper body, protein shake or energy drink close by

2) Chicks – usually on the elliptical, cellphone nearby for texting, never pick up a weight, rockin’ Gaga or Kesha on the iPod

3) Old guys – mostly on the bikes, sometimes walking on the treadmill, always naked in the sauna

4) No cluers – wearing jeans and a wife beater or tall tee, also has weight lifting gloves on, usually wandering around

5) Normals – Me. And a couple other people.

Now I’m not saying everyone falls into one of these categories, but..actually yeah they do.

I started my throwing this week to get ready for Spring Training.  My arm feels good and hopefully will stay that way.  I’m working out at Holman Baseball Academy(which I also work at, which is nice) 6 days a week, so it’s nice to be able to get some stuff done and work at the same time!  It has taken me 3 off seasons here to find a nice indoor facility to do my throwing in.  It’s a lot different up here than in the south.  In Tennessee, and all throughout the southeast, indoor baseball facilities are everywhere it seems.  In the north, it’s all about soccer. Not many baseball-only facilities.

Next, did anyone see the post game interviews last night after the Auburn/Oregon game? You’ve gotta be kidding me!  The offensive/defensive players of the game for Auburn(no idea what their names are, really don’t care either) need speech therapy classes.  I couldn’t understand a word either guy said, so I had to get online this morning to read their quotes about the game.  On the other side of things, Cam Newton gave a great interview.  Like every other SEC fan, I was glad Auburn pulled it out.  I argue all summer long with my buddies from the west coast about the whole Pac 10/SEC thing, so it’s nice to have some more ammo for that.

One last thing, the NFL Playoffs.  I am sticking with my Eagles/Packers winner as Super Bowl champs, so I guess I’ll be rooting for Green Bay the rest of the way.  Speaking of the Eagles, I’m surrounded by their fans up here in PA.  I remember all the comments when the Eagles originally signed Vick.  Every person around hated the guy and couldn’t believe their beloved team would sign him.  Now, you can’t walk down the street without seeing a Vick jersey!  I guess that’s sports though; one minute you hate the guy, next minute he’s the face of your team.

Okay, I’m done ranting now.  Guess it’s time to hit the gym.  I’ve got my iPod charged and ready for some Kings of Leon. Or maybe Bieber.

The fast is here!

I hope everyone is having a good start to 2011.  I have had a great first week of the new year, but it’s definately been a challenge.  As I said at the end of my last blog, I decided to start a 21 day fast this past Monday.  If you’re not familiar with fasting or have never done a fast(like me), it’s not an easy thing to do.

Sometime in December, my wife and her mom decided they were going to do something called “The Daniel Fast”, starting on January 3rd.  This particular fast is a biblically based partial fast.  Some fasts consist of not eating at all for a certain number of days, but this fast is not like that.  The fast consists of eating ONLY fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts; basically anything from the ground.  Oh yeah, and you can only drink water.  No meat, no cheese, no caffeine, no sugar, not even bread…nothing.

I had been looking for something to kick start my year and get me off to a good start, both physically and mentally.  After studying up on their fast, I decided to give it a shot with one addition, grilled chicken.  I decided that with working out I needed more protein in my diet, so I allow myself one piece of grilled chicken after my workouts.  Now, you may or may not know me, but I’m not your “fruits and veggies” kinda guy.  As my mom said to me when I told her about the fast, “You don’t like fruits or vegetables, what are you going to eat?”

I’m in my 4th day of the fast right now, and so far I’m doing well.  The first day or two, my wife and I both had some headaches from lack of sugar(we think).  By the way, you can’t imagine how hard it is to find stuff at the grocery store with no sugar in it.  Everything has sugar it in…EVERYTHING!  The last two days we have turned the corner and are getting the hang of it.  Instead of a couple cups of coffee with eggs and bacon in the morning, I now stick to grapes, apples, and almonds.  Instead of whatever is convenient for dinner, I’m now eating whole grain pasta or rice and a salad with peppers, cucumbers, and carrots.  Not the most glamorous meals, but they actually aren’t that bad.  I forgot how much I like carrots.  Seriously.  Enough about the fast, I’ll keep everyone updated on how we are doing with it.

As far as baseball goes, I’ve turned the intensity of my workouts up this week.  Longer runs, more weights, more stretching.  My throwing program starts up on Monday, but I actually threw a little bit last night while working with some kids at work.  I was hesitant to throw for the first time, because I got tendonitis in my shoulder back in October when I was playing in the Arizona Fall League.  I’m happy to say that it felt really good, so I’m excited to get back into the swing of things.

I like this time of year with all of the bowl games going on and the NFL Playoffs starting up.  It gives me something to watch outside of my wifes normal shows(Housewives of Wherever, 16 and Who Cares, etc.).  I’m going to go ahead and throw out this prediction…even though I would love to see Peyton take the Colts all the way, I’ll take the winner of this weeks Eagles/Packers game to win the SuperBowl.  I know, bold(and probably stupid) prediction.  I don’t really care who wins any of the playoff games, but watch out for the Redskins next year!  Yeah right.  Well, if you’ve wasted a couple minutes of your life reading this, thanks.  You can go back to Facebook now. Or Twitter. Have a good day!

The First One

Well, here it is…the first blog.  I’ve been thinking a while about doing some sort of writing, but I couldn’t really figure out what exactly would fit me best.  I thought about a journal, blogging, and I even told my wife that I wanted to write a book.  For those of you that know us, you can imagine her reaction to that one!  So after a long thought process(about 1 day), I decided to give this a try.  I’m not really sure yet how often I will post new blogs, but I’m thinking at least twice a week.

One of the main reasons I decided to do this blog was because a lot of people ask me what it’s like to play minor league baseball or what it’s like moving around so much.   I also figured this would be a good way to keep my friends and family informed of what’s going on.  I’m not saying I have the most interesting lifestyle, but it’s definately different.  Since 2007, my first season in professional baseball, I have moved a total of 12 times(that’s not even counting Spring Training every March).  So to say I am good at picking up and moving my life in the blink of an eye would be a pretty accurate statement.

Moving around so much has its ups and downs.  It’s awesome to live in different parts of the county and to play in some really nice places where people love baseball.  The bad part about it is being away from my family.  Six months out of the year, I don’t really get to see any of my family unless they make a trip to watch me pitch.  My wife has traveled with me over the past 2 seasons, so that has made it easier on the both of us!

2011 is going to be a big year for me in baseball.  I hope to start the season in AAA, which happens to be the Durham Bulls.  There are still a few months before the season starts, but I think that’s where I will land.  For me, the start of a new year means it’s time to get after it.  It’s time to start running more, lifting more, and next week it’s time to start throwing again in preparation for Spring Training in March.

I will get more into the whole “baseball life” in other posts, so I’ll stop there for now.  I can promise you that some of my blogs will not be well thought out, and may not even make sense at times!  But then again, if you know me, I don’t make sense at times.  I’m going to leave it at that for my first blog.  I’ll post again next week about the new year and my first challenge of 2011…a 21 day fast.  I hope everyone has a great New Years Eve, and be safe!
